Both are pilgrimage destinations for serious yoga practitioners — but they serve completely different purposes. Rishikesh is where the full spectrum of classical yoga traditions converge; Mysore is where Ashtanga yoga was codified and where serious Ashtanga practitioners come to learn Mysore-style self-practice from authorised teachers in the lineage.

Rishikesh
Rishikesh offers the most complete classical yoga education available: Hatha from the Bihar and Sivananda schools, Ashtanga from teachers who studied with Pattabhi Jois and Sharath, Kundalini in the tradition of Yogi Bhajan, yogic philosophy, Sanskrit, and pranayama. For a practitioner who wants breadth and doesn't yet have a single lineage, Rishikesh is the right first India destination.

Mysore is only for Ashtanga practitioners. KPJAYI (the Shri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute) teaches Mysore-style self-practice under the guidance of Sharath Jois. Being "authorised" to teach by this lineage requires years of practice in Mysore. The experience of practising in the shala where the system was developed, in a room full of dedicated practitioners from around the world, is unlike any other yoga experience. But it has nothing to offer beginners or multi-style practitioners.
